§ Mr. ROWLANDSasked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the fact that on the 29th January, 1910, a man and a woman were cut to pieces at the Crabtree Manorway level crossing, Belvedere; that the coroner's jury investigating the case urged that a footbridge should be constructed there in consequence of the number of workmen using the crossing on their way to and from their work at several factories, and also by the fact that residents on the north side had to use the crossing; that this recommendation was supported by the Erith Urban District Council; and that nothing has been done by the railway company; and whether, seeing that on the 30th January, 1911, another fatal accident occurred at the crossing, it is the intention of the Board of Trade to take any action to secure the safety of the public?
Mr. BUXTONThe Board of Trade have no compulsory powers with regard to this crossing, but m connection with the accident of 29th January, 1910, I have been in communication with the Managing Committee of the railway, and I understand that the question of the provision of a footbridge has been under discussion between them and the Local Authority. I am communicating further with the Committee with reference to the recent accident, and I will inform my hon. Friend of the result.
