HC Deb 14 December 1911 vol 32 cc2519-20
Captain WARING

asked the Lord Advocate whether, in view of the importance attached to the office of sheriff principal, he will consider the advisability of issuing an administrative order disallowing sheriffs principal from practising at the Bar, in order that their whole time may be devoted to the efficient performance of their duties?

The LORD ADVOCATE (Mr. Ure)

The answer to my hon. Friend's question is in the negative.

Captain WARING

Why are sheriffs exempt, while the disability is placed upon sheriff substitutes?

Mr. URE

The change suggested would involve a very serious charge on public funds.

Mr. WATT

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the wisdom of permitting solicitors to be appointed to these positions the same as solicitors are permitted to be appointed to the position of sheriff substitutes?

Mr. URE

No. I do not think so.
