Mr. CAWLEYasked the hon. Member for Southampton, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether any works to be done by his Department had been suspended or delayed during the continuance of the present low rate of unemployment with a view to furnishing more employment when that rate rose; and, if so, in what instances this had been done?
Mr. DUDLEY WARDAlthough some attempt has been made by the Office of Works to arrange its work so as to meet seasonal depressions in trade, it has not been found possible to deal with cyclical trade depressions in the manner suggested in the question.
