HC Deb 04 December 1911 vol 32 c998
Sir FORTESCUE FLANNERY

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the fact that although the town of Halstead, in Essex, has had no fresh cases of swine-fever for more than a month it is still treated as a swine-fever infected area; whether he is also aware that, in consequence of the above, loss has been sustained locally; and if he will now give instructions for the order to be removed?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Runciman)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I regret the loss and inconvenience occasioned by this and similar orders, but experience goes to show that it could not with safety be withdrawn at the present time. I have given instructions for the case to be referred to me again in the near future.

Sir F. FLANNERY

What length of time is considered sufficient? Is three months not enough?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Three months have not yet elapsed.
