asked whether the right hon. Gentleman can give the number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease known to have existed in Russia, Germany, Holland, Belgium, and France in October or the last known monthly report?

The latest available information as to foot-and-mouth disease in the countries named may be summarised as follows:—In Russia 450,099 animals were attacked in June last. In Germany the disease existed, or was suspected to exist, on 33,707 premises (gehöfte) on the 31st October last. In Holland 4,391 outbreaks occurred in October last. In Belgium the disease was reported to exist on 1,069 sets of premises (foyers) in the first fortnight of October last. In France the disease was reported from 20,729 sets of premises (étables) in September last.
