HC Deb 14 August 1911 vol 29 c1566
Mr. BRADY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will explain why the Irish Board of Works only pays the St. Stephen's Green park workers an average weekly wage of 17s., whilst men in similar employment in the London parks receive 28s., and whether he is prepared to place the Dublin men on terms of equality in the matter of wages with the London park workers?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The average weekly wage of workers in St. Stephen's Green is 17s. 10d., allowing 6d for the value of special privileges of Government workers. These wages should be compared not with those paid in London, but with those paid to men doing similar work for private employers in the Dublin district. The average wage of the latter is 15s. per week. I would refer the hon. Member to my answers to questions on this subject by the hon Member for Dublin City and others in the 1910 Session.
