HC Deb 07 August 1911 vol 29 cc785-6
Mr. HUNT

asked the Postmaster-General whether, in view of the statements made at the Imperial Conference, he can now say when a reduction from 9d. per word for Press cables between the United Kingdom and the Oversea Dominions will be made?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I am in negotiation with the cable companies on this question, and I am not at present in a position to make a statement on the subject.

Mr. HUNT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Australians are very anxious that this should be brought about?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Yes. Throughout the British Empire there is great anxiety to secure a reduction in Press rates, an interest which I myself fully share.
