HC Deb 07 August 1911 vol 29 cc786-7
Mr. SNOWDEN

asked how many fatalities have occurred during the present year in connection with the coaling of British warships, and if he is aware that on the 11th of July last there were four such fatalities at Portland, and that these accidents are clue to the rush and hurry to make records for quick coaling; and what steps does he intend to take to prevent this loss of life?

Mr. McKENNA

The total number of fatal accidents during the coaling of His Majesty's ships in 1911 is three, one of which occurred at Portland on the 10th July. It cannot be said that these accidents were caused by undue haste in coaling.

Mr. SNOWDEN

What was the cause of the particular accident referred to?

Mr. McKENNA

I think the case referred to was due to defective machinery.

Mr. FALLE

Has any compensation or will any compensation be paid to the relatives?

Mr. McKENNA

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman would give notice of a detailed question.
