HC Deb 02 August 1911 vol 29 cc374-5
Mr. BOWERMAN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that women viewers in the Royal Army Clothing Department are termed women temporary viewers, although they may be employed for twenty years or more in. the department; and whether he will consider if these women can be placed on the same terms as the men viewers, namely, that after two years' continuous service they may become established viewers?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Colonel Seely)

The term temporary is in this case not correct, and the question of limiting its use in future to cases of strictly temporary employment is being dealt with.

Mr. BOWERMAN

asked the Under-Secretary for War whether he is aware (hat the women viewers in the Royal Army Clothing Department only receive 15s. per week in wages; and whether the Department or the Advisory Committee will take their case into consideration with a view to placing their wages at a figure more in keeping with those paid by good employers?

Colonel SEELY

The rate of wage is as stated. The work requires no technical skill and is light and simple, and I am informed that it is certainly more highly remunerated than work of a similar nature would be by good employers in the district. But I shall be glad to refer the matter to the Fair-Wages Advisory Committee if the women viewers so request.
