HC Deb 02 August 1911 vol 29 c362
Mr. MIDDLEMORE

asked what British war vessel, or war vessels, were there on the 24th July between. Rio de Janeiro and the line that would have been available for the protection of British commerce had war broken out on that date.

Mr. McKENNA

None of His Majesty's ships were between Rio and the Equator on the 24th July. There were no men-of-war belonging to any possible enemy between Rio de Janeiro and the Equator on the date named, and consequently there was no need of protection in that particular region.

Mr. HUNT

Were there any merchantmen which could be turned into armoured cruisers?

Mr. McKENNA

I am unable to say without notice, but I should think not.
