§ Mr. KEIR HARDIEasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention had been drawn to the action of Mr. Morgan, tax assessor at Pontypridd, who refuses to accept properly filled up returns from working-men owners of cottages at Mountain Ash unless the title deeds to the cottage were produced before him at his office at Pontypridd; whether he had been informed that the title deeds could be seen at Mountain Ash, despite which he was threatening to distrain upon them unless they either comply with his demand or pay Income Tax in lieu of House Duty; and what action he proposes taking to protect the cottage owners in question from the expense and annoyance to which they are being subjected?
§ Mr. HOBHOUSEI wrote to the hon. Member on Thursday last, giving him a full explanation of all the circumstances alluded to in his question. As I stated in that letter, I do not think that the collector has exceeded his duty in the matter.
§ Mr. KEIR HARDIECan the right hon. Gentleman state on what dates Mr. Morgan visited Mountain Ash and where his office was situated? The facts stated in the right hon. Gentleman's reply are altogether inaccurate.
§ Mr. HOBHOUSEI have no reason to believe that they are inaccurate. If the hon. Gentleman wishes me to reply to the question I must ask him to put it on the Paper, and I will ascertain the desired information.
