HC Deb 05 April 1911 vol 23 c2197
Mr. NEWDEGATE

asked the Prime Minister whether, in order to put an end to the idea existing among a section of the electorate that the House of Lords as a political body is responsible for legal decisions arrived at by Law Lords sitting as a court of appeal, he will cause the name of that court to be altered in Government publications from House of Lords to Supreme Court of Appeal?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I have no power to carry out this suggestion, and I see no necessity for it.

Mr. W. R. PEEL

Are there not a number of even well educated persons, even graduates of Oxford and Cambridge Universities who would be unable to distinguish between the position of the Law Lords and the other Members of the House of Lords?

The PRIME MINISTER

I hope not.
