HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 c1988
Sir WILLIAM BULL

asked whether the Orange River Colony is to be allowed, under the new Immigration Bill, to exclude Asiatics from the State, thus creating a racial bar against Asiatics on the Statute Books of the Union?

Mr. HARCOURT

The Union Immigration Bill contains no reference to the Orange Free State, but leaves existing legislation there unaltered.

Mr. LYNCH

Is there such a place recognised as the "Orange River Colony"?

Mr. HARCOURT

That is obviously a misprint.

Mr. O'GRADY

asked if the admission of an Asiatic into the Union of South Africa, under the new Immigration Bill, also provides for the admission of his wife and minor children?

Mr. HARCOURT

Since Ministers' minute, printed on page 18 of Command Paper 5579, was written the Minister of the Interior has given notice of an addition to Clause 5, which provides for the admission of the wife and minor children of Asiatics permitted to enter or re-enter the Union so long as such wife and children do not fall under the proscription of being prohibited immigrants in terms of Clause 4 of the Bill already published.
