Mr. SUMMERSasked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to a case tried at the Colwyn Bay Police Court on the 11th instant, where a Welsh woman, appearing on behalf of her husband, summoned on a charge of neglecting to send her son to school, was told by the chairman that if she had the interpreter sworn and a conviction resulted, the costs would be increased by an additional fee for interpreting; whether he will make arrangements that these fees for interpreting, in eases where the English language is not understood by Welsh-speaking witnesses, shall be made a public charge, and if legislation is required will he at once introduce a Bill for the purpose?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLThe remark in question was due to a misapprehension on the part of the chairman. When it is necessary to pay for an interpreter at Colwyn Bay Police Court the cost is borne by county funds.
§ Mr. BRIDGEMANWill the fees of the interpreter in the case of David Davies, arrested on a charge of burglary at Oswestry, fall on my Constituents?
