HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 c2001
Mr. SUMMERS

asked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to a case tried at the Colwyn Bay Police Court on the 11th instant, where a Welsh woman, appearing on behalf of her husband, summoned on a charge of neglecting to send her son to school, was told by the chairman that if she had the interpreter sworn and a conviction resulted, the costs would be increased by an additional fee for interpreting; whether he will make arrangements that these fees for interpreting, in eases where the English language is not understood by Welsh-speaking witnesses, shall be made a public charge, and if legislation is required will he at once introduce a Bill for the purpose?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The remark in question was due to a misapprehension on the part of the chairman. When it is necessary to pay for an interpreter at Colwyn Bay Police Court the cost is borne by county funds.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Will the fees of the interpreter in the case of David Davies, arrested on a charge of burglary at Oswestry, fall on my Constituents?
