HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 c1986
Mr. ROBINSON

asked if the sum of £300,000 was being raised by loan to cover the current year's expenses; and, if so, whether the War Office will take steps to include in the Estimates such money as is required for the year's expenses and so avoid the raising of loans?

Colonel SEELY

For many years prior to 1906 it was the practice to make provision for important works services under Military Works Loans. In that year it was decided to abolish the system of Military Works Loans altogether. Under the Loans Act already sanctioned by Parliament the sum of nearly six millions could be expended, but his Majesty's Government resolved to limit further issues to 1½ millions required to complete works in hand and ancillary services. These works are now nearing completion and the sum of £300,000 referred to represents the amount that it is anticipated will be spent in 1911–12. Provision for all new services is now made on Votes.
