asked how many retired officers of the Royal Navy, in each rank, are still retained on active service?

The list is a considerable one, and I shall be glad if my Noble Friend would allow me to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The following are the retired officers at present employed on the Active List:

Admirals 4
Rear-Admirals (Including 1 Engineer Rear Admiral) 10
Captains (Including 47 Engineer Captains 1 Paymaster Captain, and 4 Surgeon Captains) 99
Commanders (Including 7 Engineer Commanders, 2 Paymaster Commanders, and 7 Surgeon Commanders) 138
Lieutenant-Commanders (Including 9 Shipwright Lieutenant-Commanders, 7 Engineer Lieutenant-Commanders) 130
Lieutenants (Including 14 Shipwright Lieutenants, 7 Honorary Lieutenants (Coastguard), 15 Engineer Lieutenants) 99
Sub-Lieutenants 1
Commissioned Warrant Officers 45
Warrant Officers 32
Chief Officers (Coastguard) 8
Total 566

In many cases, I am informed, officers are about to revert to the Retired or Emergency List.
