HC Deb 16 March 1910 vol 15 cc349-50
Mr. FELL

asked the Prime Minister if he would appoint a Select Committee to examine into and report upon the question of the growth of sugar beet and the manufacture of sugar in the United Kingdom; and whether the whole or a large portion of the £17,000,000 worth of sugar now imported could be produced in the United Kingdom, to the great benefit of agriculture and of the unemployed?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am not satisfied that any useful purpose would be likely to be served by the appointment of a Committee as suggested by the hon. Member.

Mr. FELL

Has not a considerable time elapsed since the Government made any inquiry as to this subject?

The PRIME MINISTER

No. The Government are very familiar with the facts.
