HC Deb 14 March 1910 vol 15 c5
Mr. WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he had yet approached the Peruvian Government with reference to the abuses in the Putomayo; whether the Peruvian Government was making every effort to correct the abuses; and what steps were actually "being taken by Peru?

The UNDER - SECRETARY for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. McKinnon Wood)

We have not yet made representions to the Peruvian Government, as we have been awaiting the result of a communication which we have made to the Government of the United States of America on the subject. We understand, however, that the Peruvian Government have of their own accord instituted an inquiry into the allegations of cruelty, and, if there should be any foundation for them, will adopt remedial measures.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

Will they send us the result of, the inquiries or must we make our own inquiries?
