HC Deb 14 March 1910 vol 15 cc21-2
Mr. NORTON-GRIFFITHS

asked the Prime Minister if he will consider the advisability of bringing in a Bill which will allow this country to set aside a sum of money with the object of emigrating at the Government expense a limited number of men to be selected by the various Labour Exchanges throughout the country and sent to Canada, Australia, or other domains, the money so advanced to be repaid over an extended period?:

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Sydney Buxton)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this question. Under Section 2 (1) of the Labour Exchanges Act, 1909, power is given to advance, as a loan, the travelling expenses of men for whom situations have been found through a Labour Exchange. Such loans are not necessarily restricted to situations in the United Kingdom. I do not at present contemplate fresh legislation on the lines suggested.
