HC Deb 09 March 1910 vol 14 cc1474-5
Mr. M'ARTHUR

asked the Under-Secretary for India if he can say as from what date the new Indian duties on tobacco and cigarettes are enforceable; whether this operation will be suspended until the question of a countervailing excise has been decided; and how soon a decision on the latter point may be expected?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Montagu)

The duties took effect from the 25th February, in accordance with the Act that has been passed by the Imperial Legislative Council of India. The Secretary of State does not propose to interfere with the operation of that Act. The Government of India have been directed to give the question of countervailing duties early consideration, but it is impossible to say within what time a decision will be arrived at.
