HC Deb 30 June 1910 vol 18 cc1107-8
Mr. WHELER

asked how many valuers, permanent and temporary, have been appointed for the assessment of the new taxes on minerals; what are the maximum and minimum salaries; and how many further appointments are contemplated?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

All the valuers who have been appointed may in the course of their duties be called upon to make valuations for the purposes of the new taxes on minerals, while even some valuers who have been appointed with more particular regard to their expert knowledge of minerals may be called upon to make valuations of the surface. It is therefore not practicable at the present time to discriminate between mineral valuers and others in the staff now in course of formation.

Mr. MITCHELL-THOMSON

Do I understand that a man appointed for ordinary valuation with no special knowledge whatever is to make mineral valuations?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

No. What I suggested was that a man appointed for ordinary valuation, but having a knowledge of mineral valuation, might be called on to value those minerals.
