HC Deb 29 June 1910 vol 18 cc950-1
Sir WALTER NUGENT

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if his attention had been drawn to the effect of the Law dealing with the deportation of paupers in the United Kingdom, which permits their being sent from Great Britain to Ireland, but does not allow Ireland to return them to Great Britain under similar circumstances, and whether, when the Bill dealing with the reform of the Poor Law is under consideration, he will introduce a clause in it to remove this inequality?

The CHIEF SECRETARY for IRELAND (Mr. Birrell)

My attention has been frequently drawn to this question, which concerns not only Ireland, but also England and Scotland. The Report of the recent Royal Commission recommends reciprocity between the three countries. The matter will receive due consideration in connection with any legislation which may be introduced for the reform of the Poor Laws.

Mr. MOORE

When will the right hon. Gentleman redeem his pledge to introduce a Bill for the reform of the Poor Law, which expired last year?

Mr. BIRRELL

I hope some time next year.
