HC Deb 27 July 1910 vol 19 cc2089-90
Colonel BATH URST

asked what is the strength of the military and naval garrison on the island of St. Helena for the defence of the island and the telegraph station situated there?

Colonel SEELY

The troops were withdrawn from St. Helena at the end of 1906, since which time no garrison, either military or naval, has been stationed there.

Mr. ASHLEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman say what steps will be taken to protect the telegraph lines in case of war?

Colonel SEELY

I think the House realises that it would be very unwise to state publicly what steps would be taken in the event of war. It depends on how far such preparations are made public how far they will be effective.
