HC Deb 14 July 1910 vol 19 cc615-6
Mr. JOHN WARD

asked whether he is able to state the probable date the collapsed trench at Newport will be reopened; and whether he can assure the relatives of the deceased workmen that such reopening will be conducted in such a manner as will enable proper means of identification and reinterment to be secured?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I am informed that it is hoped the concrete monoliths which are being constructed to make the work of excavation safe will be completed by the end of next month, and that the work of piling and reopening the trench will then be proceeded with. It is intended by those responsible that the work shall be carried out with reverent regard to the desire of the relatives of the deceased to have the bodies identified and separately interred, but they are unable to say how far identification will be possible.
