HC Deb 14 July 1910 vol 19 cc612-3
Mr. JOWETT

asked the President of the Board of Trade what are the hours of duty of lighthouse keepers in the service of Trinity House; whether there is any other work to be performed outside those hours; and what facilities are given to the keepers for leaving their stations when off duty?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Tennant)

I am informed by the Trinity House that there are no stipulated hours of duty for light housekeepers in their service, but that the regulations provide that during the daytime one of the keepers shall be on duty for the purpose of keeping weather records, etc. At night the keepers in turn are on watch in the lantern, and such watches do not, as a rule, exceed five hours. Keepers are allowed occasionally to be absent from the station during the day, but must return half an hour before sunset. They are also granted fourteen days' annual holiday.
