HC Deb 14 July 1910 vol 19 cc604-5
Lord CHARLES BERESFORD

asked what period of time elapsed between the laying down and the launching of the new German battleship "Oldenburg"; and how will her armament compare with the British battleships of the "Temeraire" type?

Mr. McKENNA

It was stated by Admiral Tirpitz, in the Reichstag on 29th March, 1909, that the contract for construction of the "Oldenburg" had been promised in the autumn of 1908. It is assumed that preparations for her building were commenced soon after the order; and the time the vessel was under construction up to the date of her launch, which took place on 30th June, 1910, should be calculated from the autumn of 1908, and probably amounts to about nineteen months. The armament the "Oldenburg" will carry is not known.
