HC Deb 12 July 1910 vol 19 c180
Mr. LANE-FOX

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he anticipates that the Yeomanry may have to fight in closely enclosed country, involving the probability of ambuscade and hand-to-hand fighting; and upon what weapon of defence they were to rely under such circumstances?

Mr. HALDANE

The hon. Member is doubtless alluding to the question of the supply of bayonets. The Yeomanry, when acting dismounted under the circumstances suggested by him, would not be at any greater disadvantage than cavalry in the matter of their armament.

Mr. GIBSON BOWLES

What is the weapon?

Mr. HALDANE

They use the rifle in the first instance

Mr. WEDGWOOD

Has the right hon. Gentleman read "War and the Arme Blanche," by Mr. Erskine Childers?

Mr. HALDANE

I had that in my mind when I gave the answer.

Mr. LANE-FOX

Will the Yeomanry soon be equipped with carbine buckets?

Mr. HALDANE

Perhaps the hon. Member will give notice of that question.
