HC Deb 12 July 1910 vol 19 c194
Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention had been called to the condition of affairs existing in connection with the Grand Surrey Canal, at Albany Road, Camberwell; if he is aware that a number of drowning fatalities have occurred there; and if he proposes to take action in the matter?

Mr. BUXTON (for Mr. Churchill)

My right hon. Friend the Home Secretary has asked me to answer this question. There were four fatalities from drowning in this arm of the Grand Surrey Canal during 1909, and there have been two this year. With one exception, those drowned were adults. The canal banks are private property, but I am considering whether it is possible for any steps to be taken to prevent such accidents there.
