HC Deb 11 July 1910 vol 19 cc34-5
Mr. LYELL

asked whether any steps have been taken to authorise the wearing by chaplains to the Territorial Forces in Scotland of any visible token of the office or military rank to which they have been gazetted; and whether any provision has been made for their residence in camp during the period of training?

Mr. HALDANE

The Army Council recognise the advisability of permitting chaplains to the Territorial Force to wear, if they desire to do so, some indication of their connection with the force. The best method of doing this at a minimum expense to the chaplains concerned is now under consideration. As regards the residence of chaplains in camp, the council are advised that the conditions under which the annual training is carried out are necessarily such that the chaplains' opportunities for usefulness, except on Sunday, would not warrant the considerable expense involved in providing for their presence in camp throughout the period of training instead of on Sundays only as at present authorised.
