HC Deb 11 July 1910 vol 19 c19
Mr. O'GRADY

asked the President of the Local Government Board what are the intentions of the Government respecting the Unemployed Workmen Act, 1905; is it to continue beyond this year, and are the usual Grants to be made from the Exchequer; and will the local distress committees be notified by circular in regard to this matter?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)

It is the intention of the Government to propose the further continuance of the Unemployed Workmen Act, 1905, for another year, and Parliament will be asked to vote a sum for the purposes of the Act as in recent Sessions. I will consider the question of sending a circular at a later date.

Mr. T. E. HARVEY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Central (Unemployed) Body and a very large number of distress committees all over the country have passed resolutions saying that they consider the Unemployed Workmen Act most inadequate, and that the whole problem needs to be dealt with on national lines?

Mr. BURNS

That question has no relation to the one on the Paper.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

May we take it that the emigration provisions of the Unemployed Workmen Act will also be continued?

Mr. BURNS

I presume so.
