HC Deb 11 July 1910 vol 19 cc25-6
Mr. NEWMAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can state how many assistant valuers have been appointed under the provisions of the Finance (1909–10) Act, 1910; what are the terms of their appointment and the amount of salary to be paid them; whether they have been required to pass any competitive or qualifying examination in those subjects in connection with which they are to assist in assessing the taxation about to be levied on a large class of the community; and, if not, will he state in whose hands the actual choice and nomination of assistant valuers rests?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The appointments in question are made by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue. The other information asked for by the hon. Member has already been given in answer to questions asked by the hon. Members for Faversham and for Eddisbury on the 22nd, 27th, 28th, and 29th ultimo.

Mr. LAWSON

Have these valuers been appointed on the recommendation of Members of this House?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I am not quite sure about that.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that eight valuers have been taken from the London County Council by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue under the Act?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I am very glad to hear it.
