HC Deb 24 February 1910 vol 14 c328
Sir GILBERT PARKER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, if any satisfaction had been granted by the Belgian Government to Messrs. King and Woeste, of Bulawayo, in connection with the incidents arising out of their trek into the Katanga?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir Edward Grey)

So far as I am aware, no compensation has been granted by the Belgian Government in connection with this incident. Subsequent inquiries did not satisfy me that the case was one in which His Majesty's Government could properly urge that compensation was due to an individual. The grievance is really against the general character of the land regulations in Katanga, which were publicly known at the time. It is now understood that these regulations will be altered.
