HC Deb 24 February 1910 vol 14 c345
Mr. MEYSEY-THOMPSON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty to what extent have life-saving appliances been retained in the coastguard stations which have been abolished since 1st January, 1906?

Mr. BUXTON

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. In no case since 1st January, 1906, has the abolition of a coastguard station by the Admiralty resulted in the withdrawal of the life-saving apparatus at any place on the coasts of the United Kingdom. Steps have been taken by the Board of Trade to provide for the efficient working of the life-saving apparatus at every place where a coastguard station has been abolished and at which there had hitherto been an apparatus.

Mr. MEYSEY-THOMPSON

I should like to ask whether the existing provision for life-saving is as adequate as before the coastguard stations were abolished?

Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON

I think so. We have done our best to make it so.

Sir GILBERT PARKER

What body of men are responsible for using the life-saving appliances?

Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON

I should like to have notice of that question.
