For the Borough of Tower Hamlets (St. George's-in-the-East) in the room of W. Wedgwood Benn, Esquire, who, since his election, hath accepted office under the Crown, as one of the Commissioners for executing the office of Treasurer of the Exchequer of Great Britain and Lord High Treasurer of Ireland.

Motion made and Question proposed, "That Mr. Speaker do issue his Warrant to the Clerk of the Crown to make out a new Writ for the electing of a Member to serve in this present Parliament for the County of Devon (Barnstaple) in the room of Ernest Joseph Soares, Esquire, who, since his election for the said county of Devon (Barnstaple), has accepted the office of one of the Commissioners for executing the Office of Treasurer to the Exchequer of Great Britain and Lord High Treasurer of Ireland."—[The Master of Elibank.]

Mr. WILLIAM REDMOND

I do not desire to offer any objection to the issue of this Writ on condition that the hon. Gentleman who moved will be kind enough to explain what the position of Lord High Treasurer of Ireland is. I never really noticed that title before, and it is a title which denotes a person evidently of great importance and a person whose acquaintance I much desire. It is perfectly obvious that a position which involves the Lord High Treasurership of Ireland must be a position deeply interesting to every Irish Member. I should like to ask the right hon. Gentleman if he can explain what this position exactly means and whether he can give me any guarantee that this Gentleman, when he is Lord High Treasurer of Ireland, will pay attention to what I say to him with regard to my Constituents?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the TREASURY (the Master of Elibank)

I must ask my hon. Friend to give me notice of that Question.

Question put, and agreed to.

Cork) in the room of William O'Brien, Esquire, who, having been returned as a Member for the said County of Cork and also for the City of Cork, has elected to sit for the City of Cork.—[Mr. William O'Brien.]
