HC Deb 21 April 1910 vol 16 c2328
Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, if, when the establishment is reopened in the Royal dockyards, he will reconsider the position of the divers; and whether, in view of the nature of the work they are called on to perform and the necessity of always keeping themselves fit and in readiness for duty, the disabilities under which they suffer, and the fitful nature of their occupation, he will place an additional number on the establishment list?

Mr. McKENNA

The selection of workmen to be placed on the established list in vacancies is made by the local officers, and it is not considered that the circumstances require that workmen who are employed as divers should be regarded as a separate class to be given preference for the establishment at the expense of other equally deserving workmen.
