HC Deb 07 April 1910 vol 16 cc607-8
Mr. GEORGE ROBERTS

asked the Parliamentary Secretary if he is aware that a Mr. Herbert King, who is an applicant for land to the Surrey County Council, has received notice from the parish council of Beddington to quit his present allotment on which he, a skilled market gardener, makes his living; is he aware that if the notice is acted upon Mr. King will have to leave the neighbourhood through inability to secure other suitable land; and can he take any action in the matter; if so, will he state what steps he proposes?

Sir E. STRACHEY

The Board are informed by the parish council that six months' notice was recently given by the Beddington Parish Council to all their allotment holders, including Mr. King, but that they will be eligible to retain their present holdings at the rental now paid, except where they hold more than forty rods, in which case the holders will be liable to have their present holdings reduced. The council have decided to reduce some of the existing holdings in order to satisfy other applicants, there being no further land available for the purpose in the district. Mr. King, who at present holds 107 rods, will only be called upon to give up thirty rods. We propose to make, further inquiry into the matter and ascertain whether a suitable small holding cannot be provided for him by the Surrey County Council.
