HC Deb 20 October 1899 vol 77 c381
CAPTAIN DONELAN (Cork, E.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that a large number of representative public boards in Ireland have recently adopted resolutions urging the necessity of facilitating peasant proprietary by a system of compulsory sale; and whether he will consider the desirability of giving effect to this general expression of Irish public opinion.

MR. G. W. BALFOUR

Representations on this subject have been received from a number of public bodies. I am not prepared to propose legislation to give effect to these resolutions.

CAPTAIN DONELAN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the system of compulsory sale has the support of many of the Ulster Unionist Members?

(No answer was given.)
