HC Deb 18 May 1899 vol 71 c917
MR. BRYN ROBERTS (Carnarvonshire, Eifion)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether British subjects in the Transvaal can acquire the rights of citizenship in the South African Republic without thereby forfeiting their allegiance to Her Majesty and all their privileges as British subjects; and, if so, whether Her Majesty's Government will use their influence with the British Uitlanders to dissuade them from abandoning their allegiance to the British Crown.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

The answer to the first question is contained in Lord Ripon's despatch, p. 92, C. 7,933, and is in the negative. Her Majesty's Government have never dissuaded Her Majesty's subjects from obtaining naturalisation in foreign countries where they intend to reside.

MR. BRYN ROBERTS

Have the Government ever taken any steps in the matter either way?

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

No; certainly not.
