HC Deb 15 May 1899 vol 71 c592
SIR MARK STEWART (Kirkcud-bright)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the negotiations with the Chinese Government for the revision of the tariff of customs duties under the Treaty of Tientsin are proceeding; and whether he can give the House any information as to their progress.

* MR. BRODRICK

Notice was given by the Chinese Government in April, 1898, under Article XXVII., of the Treaty of Tientsin, of their desire for a revision of the tariff, but no proposals have since been received from them on the subject, and no negotiations are at present in progress.
