HC Deb 05 May 1899 vol 70 c1427
CAPTAIN SINCLAIR (Forfar)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India if he will give to the House the latest figures in his possession as to the imports of sugar into India from various countries, and the exports of sugar from India.; and whether the two duties now levied on European sugar entering India result in a net protective duty of five per cent. in favour of the Indian producer?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord GEORGE HAMILTON, Middle-sex, Ealing)

The papers which I hope to present to Parliament next week on the subject of countervailing duties in India will contain the statistics desired by the honourable and gallant Member down to the end of February last, so far as they are available. A duty of 5 per cent. ad valorem was imposed in 1894 upon all imports into India except yarn and cotton goods, and this duty, imposed for revenue purposes, may be in its operation protective to the extent of 5 per cent. so far as it affects imports which compete with Indian products.
