HC Deb 28 March 1899 vol 69 cc636-7
SIR CHARLES DILKE

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade, if his attention has been called to the inquest on Wednesday last touching the death of George J. Stevenson, a goods guard of the South Eastern Railway, who was crushed between the buffers in coupling; whether he is aware that the evidence showed that the shunting pole was useless in the case of many kinds of coupling now in use: whether Stevenson's death has been duly reported to the Board; and, whether any proceedings can be taken by the Board of Trade in the case?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE

The Board have received the Coroner's return and an intimation of the accident from the Company by telegraph. The formal return from the Company has not yet been received. I have ordered an inquiry by a Sub-Inspector.
