HC Deb 28 March 1899 vol 69 cc638-9
MR. M'KENNA (Monmouth, N.)

I beg to ask the Vice-President of the Committee of Council on Education, whether his attention has been called to the fact that the new provisions in the Day School Code for 1899–1900, relating to the training and education of pupil teachers, come far short of the recommendations of the recent Departmental Committee on the subject; and, whether he proposes to carry out these recommendations at a later date?

THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL ON EDUCATION (Sir J. GORST,) Cambridge University

Yes, I am aware that the new provisions in the Day School Code about the pupil teachers fall far short of the recommendations of the Departmental Committee and of what the Education Department itself considers desirable in the interests of the teachers. I hope to be able to obtain a further report upon the subject.
