HC Deb 23 March 1899 vol 69 c147
COLONEL MILWARD (Warwick, Stratford-on-Avon)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether it is intended to withdraw the British troops from Lundi Kotal and to hold the Khaibar Pass by Khaibar levies; whether it is intended to complete the fort upon Suffolk Hill, above Lundi Kotal; whether a satisfactory water supply defensible in case of need has been obtained; and, whether the supporting force at Peshawar will be increased or rendered more mobile?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord GEORGE HAMILTON, Middlesex, Ealing)

The answers to the first and last clauses of my honourable Friend's Question are in the affirmative The position and construction of the proposed fort on Suffolk Hill, and the question of its water supply, are still under consideration.

MR. MACLEAN (Cardiff)

Will the supporting force at Peshawar be instructed to support the native levies and hot leave them the lurch?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA

I do not think that question arises out of, or is in any way connected with, my answer.
