HC Deb 21 March 1899 vol 68 cc1562-3
SIR MANCHERJEE BHOWNAG-GREE (Bethnal Green, N.E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether, in the contemplated transfer of a part of the Imperial Institute to another body, such portions thereof are included as have been heretofore devoted to the purposes for which money grants have been made by the Government of India, and also such other parts of the Institute as have been built at the expense of donations received from India; and, if so, will he state if any and what measures are being adopted to reserve the portions in question for the special purposes for which they were originally intended or set apart?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord GEORGE HAMILTON,) Middlesex, Ealing

In behalf of India, whence very liberal gifts were contributed to the Imperial Institute, I have taken steps to secure the objects contemplated in the honourable Member's Question. It has been arranged that, in the event of any transfer such as is suggested in the Question, the Imperial Institute buildings now devoted to Indian purposes, and the parts of the buildings constructed from Indian contributions, shall be reserved for Indian objects. I shall be happy to give to my honourable Friend, if he wishes it, a copy of a Memorandum showing the arrangement that has been made.
