HC Deb 20 March 1899 vol 68 c1320
MR. DILLON

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the town inspector of Belfast called on the Protestant Bishop of Belfast, and advised him to remove the Reverend Mr. Peoples from St. Clement's Church?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

It is the fact that the Commissioner of Police recently had an audience with the Bishop of Down and Connor. The proceedings at the interview were of a confidential nature, and I am unable, therefore, to make any statement as to what transpired on the occasion.

MR. DILLON

I must press the right honourable Gentleman for a definite answer, as this is a serious matter. Did the police official, representing the Government of Belfast, give this advice?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

The interview was of a confidential character.

MR. DILLON

I shall endeavour to raise the question on the Vote on Account.
