§ COLONEL SIR HOWARD VINCENT (Sheffield Central)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he can state the amount of property reported as stolen and the amount recovered in the Metropolitan and City Police districts between 1st January 1888 and 31st December 1897, and if he is in a position to give this information as to the year 1898?
§ THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. JESSE COLLINGS,) Birmingham, BordesleyAs regards the Metropolitan Police, the figures for 1898 cannot be given at present, but figures for the previous 20 years are given on page 49 of the Commissioner's last Annual Report. As regards the City of London, the amount of property reported as stolen in the City Police district between 1st January 1888, and 3rd December, 1897, was valued at £186,270 12s. 10d., of which amount £33,155 6s. 3d. was recovered; the 1307 similar figures for 1898 are, respectively, £15,020 5s. 0d. and £2,259 153. 9d.
