HC Deb 20 March 1899 vol 68 c1327
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in view of the conflict which has arisen between the Supreme Court of Ceylon and the Agents of the Governor in regard to the working of the Governor's Ordinance, No. 1, of 1897, will he, pending the consideration of the whole question by the Colonial Office, give instructions that the police forces of the Crown shall not be employed for the purpose of evicting people by force from lands to which they claim ownership?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES

There has been no conflict between the Supreme Court and the Government Agents in Ceylon. I am awaiting the receipt of a Report from the Governor, and pending its receipt I have not seen any reason to give special instructions in the matter.
