HC Deb 17 March 1899 vol 68 c1145
MR. O'MALLEY (Galway, Connemara)

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney-General for Ireland whether he is aware of the proceedings of Mr. Hazell, Petty Sessions Clerk of Clifden, who, when canvassing his tenants and others over whom he is agent, on behalf of Mr. Henry Robinson, J.P., candidate for the County Council of Galway, has informed them that he will be present in the booth and will see how those of them who are illiterate will record their votes: and whether he will take steps for the protection of those electors?

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. ATKINSON, Londonderry. N.)

I informed the honourable Member yesterday that the attention of Mr. Hazell, Petty Sessions Clerk of Carna (not Clifden), had been directed to this matter, and that he had undertaken to take no further part in the election in question. No further action on my part is called for unless Mr. Hazell again violates the Rules of the Department.
