HC Deb 13 March 1899 vol 68 cc533-4
DR. AMBROSE

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that Mr. Garvey, of Murrisk, county Mayo, was dismissed from the Royal Navy and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour for stealing the money of a brother Naval Officer, and that he was subsequently employed as petty sessions clerk at Louisburgh, county Mayo, but had to be called on to resign in consequence of defalcations in his accounts; and, if so, whether, under the circumstances, Mr. Garvey will be continued in his present position, in which he is entrusted with the distribution of the funds of the Congested Districts Board in connection with the improvement of the breed of farm stock and poultry?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

A similar Question was put to me by the honourable Member or. Monday last, containing reference to a claim by Mr. Garvey for compensation, which it was suggested was of a fraudulent character. I then requested the honourable Member to postpone the Question until after the Assizes, which open on Saturday next, in order to avoid any risk of prejudicing the case when it comes before the judge at the Assizes. Under the circumstances, I must request be honourable Member to be good enough to postpone the present Question also for the same reason.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

Is Mr. Garvey still discharging his duties, or is he suspended temporarily?
