HC Deb 02 March 1899 vol 67 c1021
MR. BRODIE HOARE (Hampstead)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can state the date on which the communication was addressed to the French Government on the subject of compensation for the families of British officers killed by French, troops at Waima, referred to by Mr. Curzon in reply to a Question on 21st July last; whether any reply has been received; and whether, if no reply has been received, Her Majesty's Government contemplate making such representations to the Government of the French Republic as may be required in order to obtain a settlement of the claims in question?

MR. BRODRICK

A communication was addressed to the French Government on 11th July 1898. No reply has yet been received. It is proposed to deal with the claims in question in connection with others arising out of affairs in West Africa now under consideration.

SIR E. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT (Sheffield, Ecclesall)

Is my right honourable Friend aware that that answer has been steadily given for the last three years?
